Africa-Press – Angola. The construction process of the Cabinda Refinery is in the equipment assembly phase, said this Tuesday in Luanda, the director of engineering and projects of the Angolan oil company Sonangol, Nimbo Virgílio.

Speaking about crude oil refining projects in Angola, during the second training seminar on oil exploration, promoted by the Association of Economic Journalists (AJECO), the official said that the work on this Refinery is more advanced, compared to refineries in Lobito (Benguela) and Soyo (Zaire).

On the occasion, he made it known that the progress of construction of the oil industry in the northernmost province of the country comes two months after the arrival of new equipment to build this infrastructure.

Projected to transform 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Cabinda Refinery has the company Gemcorp as its majority shareholder, with 90% of the shares, while Sonangol has 10 percent.

This refinery, whose completion is scheduled for 2024, will essentially serve the local and regional market.

With regard to the Lobito Refinery, Nimbo Virgílio made it known that it is currently in the engineering and setting up of partnerships phase, with its launch expected in 2025. It has an expected capacity to produce 200,000 barrels of crude oil/day.

This project, aimed at the domestic and regional market of SADC, has an open corporate structure, giving opportunity to new investors.

In addition to Cabinda and Lobito, the country also plans to have the Soyo Refinery (Zaire), which is in the demining phase (80%) and deforestation, in an area of 712 hectares.

With launch scheduled for 2025, this industry expects to produce 100,000 barrels of oil/day. Its corporate structure is divided into 90% of Quanten and 10% of Sonangol.

According to the director of engineering and projects at the state-owned oil company Sonangol, the existing deficit between supply and demand for refined products in the country will be filled when the construction of the three refineries is completed.

Currently, the country only has the Luanda Refinery for the transformation of crude oil into derivative products.

With a capacity to produce 65 thousand barrels per day, this unit was inaugurated on May 3, 1958, at the time with a capacity to process two thousand barrels per day.

After benefiting from rehabilitation and expansion, the Luanda Refinery has a storage capacity of 580,000 cubic meters (42% crude + 58% refined products).

As a result, this industry produces 775,000 metric tons of diesel, which corresponds to 36% of the country’s needs, 432,000 of gasoline (35%), 42,000 of butane gas (10%), 130,000 metric tons of Kerosene (petroleum illuminant) – 100% of market demand – 300 thousand of JET-A1 (100%), one million and 150 thousand of fuel oil (100%) and 43 thousand of asphalt (38%).
