Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, praised, the historic role of women in building the Nation, from the fight for independence to the present day.
Speaking at the opening session of the colloquium on the Historical Evolution of Women’s Participation in the Legislative Power in Angola, the leader of the Angolan parliament recalled that, in the past, women faced immense challenges to assert themselves in Parliament and in decision-making bodies, but that their resilience paved the way for the current female representation in politics.“A country that empowers its women is a country with a more prosperous and resilient future,” said Carolina Cerqueira, who went on to state that the month of March symbolises the resistance, achievement and affirmation of Angolan women in society and reinforces the commitment to continue working to eliminate barriers and promote equality.
She mentioned, for example, that in the People’s Assembly in 1980, only 9% of the deputies were women, a percentage that gradually increased to reach the current 40.1%.
