Africa-Press – Angola. The film “The Son of the Bride” (El hijo de la noiva) by Argentine filmmaker Juan José Campanella will be shown today at 5:30 pm at the Pepetela Auditorium at Camões – Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda.The film screening takes place within the scope of the partnership between the Cinéfilos & Literatus project and the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Angola, in partnership with Camões, Kino Yetu and support from Refriango and Rosalina Express, which aims to promote Argentine cinema and create cultural exchange between our peoples.
The screening of “The Bride’s Son”, at dusk, in the Pepetela Auditorium, will be preceded by a conversation on the theme “Argentine cinema in the world and in the Angolan context”, with speakers including the Argentine ambassador to Angola, Nicolás Sérgio Rebok, and filmmaker Ery Claver, and moderator André Gomes, coordinator and film curator of the Cinéfilos & Literatus Project.
“The Son of the Bride”, with an original script by Juan José Campanella and Fernando Castets, tells the story of Rafael Belverde (Ricardo Darín) who is not happy with his life. He never has time, he sinks into the sofa, “zapping” and consoles himself with old episodes of his favourite series “El Zorro”. But, at 42 years old, he is nothing like his fictional hero. The childhood years when he held a sword, wore a black cape and believed he was the hidden personality of Don Diego de la Vega have inevitably passed.
Now reality is much more complex and Rafael cannot meet anyone’s expectations in anything. He has lost his ideals, lives holed up in his father’s restaurant, is divorced, has not bothered to find time to watch his daughter grow up, has no friends, is not committed to his girlfriend and has not visited his mother for over a year, who has Alzheimer’s and is hospitalized in a geriatric hospital.
Rafael just wants to be left alone. But a series of unexpected events will force him to rethink his life. An old childhood friend, despite having suffered a personal tragedy, will help Rafael rebuild his past and recover his present. Rafael will also help his father marry his wife in church, thus fulfilling an old dream of his mother’s.
The film “Son of the Bride” was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Film at the 2002 edition by the Hollywood Academy.
