Africa-Press – Angola. The citizens of Luena, capital of Moxico province, defended, this Thursday, the implementation of more social infrastructures, to boost and improve the image of the city.

As part of the commemoration of the city’s 67th anniversary, which marks May 18, the residents pointed to the construction of academic infrastructures, such as media libraries and the municipal library, to boost the student life of the local population .

The city-dweller Augusto Mulau said that, in addition to academic infrastructure, the region needs more recreational spaces, to provide an efficient occupation of youth.

Elder Paulino Upale highlighted the improvements that the old Portuguese village has seen, fundamentally, in the growth of new neighbourhoods, as well as in the supply of electricity and water supply for the population.

However, he defended more attention to basic sanitation, which in his view, the heap of garbage that has been verified in the city center and in the periphery continue to tarnish the image of the city of Luena.

Professor Carla Domingas asked for greater attention in strengthening the public transport network, as well as in organizing the emergence of new neighborhoods on the periphery, which in her opinion has been misaligned with the architectural image of Luena.

“The new neighborhoods are tapered, without any streets, a factor that has overshadowed the beauty of Luena”, he said.

In the same vein, city-dweller Joaquina Macedo requested greater medical and medication assistance, as well as the construction of more schools, to ensure the well-being of the population, an opinion corroborated by Professor Gabriel Vieira.

On his turn, the municipal administrator of Moxico, Horácio Sachamuaha, who was speaking during the act of unveiling the gallery of former municipal administrators of Moxico (headquarters), promised to continue working to improve the provision of basic services to the population, in the domains water, electricity, and sanitation.

According to the official, in addition to these measures that could provide preventive health among the population, the Municipal Administration of Moxico will provide for the creation of infrastructures for the practice of sports, as well as subdivision of land for self-construction, with a view to to combat anarchic construction.

The former Luso village was elevated to the status of city on May 18, 1956, in the colonial era, and was renamed Luena after achieving National Independence in 1975.

To salute the date, various sports, cultural and recreational activities are being carried out.

The city of Luena, capital of the province of Moxico, is inhabited by 468 thousand and 369 inhabitants of different ethnic groups, according to the projection of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
