Africa-Press – Angola. Several athletes, with emphasis on those from the National Senior Women’s Handball Team, were awarded by the Angolan Olympic Committee (COA), in an activity called Gala Champions Gold 2023, held at the Paz Flor complex, in Luanda.
The distinction of the African champions is due to the title of the pre-Olympic tournament, won in 2023, in the country’s capital, in an event that concludes the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the COA, marked (Saturday), after its creation in 1979.
In addition to the “African pearls”, the name of the women’s handball team, the canoeing team was also awarded for qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, by winning the 500m event, with the duo Benilson Sanda and Manuel António.
Also on the list of honorees were the African women’s wrestling champion, Joseth Mavungo, in the 69kg category, registered in Tunisia, as well as the optimist sailing, Karate-do and gymnastics selection.
Angola, which debuted in 1980, at the Olympic Games in Moscow, has its 10th participation, after Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Beijing (2008 ), London (2012), Rio de Janeiro (2016) and Tokyo (2020).
Before the gala, the COA held, on Thursday, the extraordinary general meeting and the ordinary general meeting, where the financial reports were presented and issues related to the institution’s statutes were addressed.
