Commission "adhoc" organizes African Games

Africa-Press – Angola. The 13th African Games, to be held from 8 to 23 March 2024, in Ghana, will be organized by an “adhoc” Commission, made up of experts from the African Union (AU) and the Association of African National Olympic Committees ( ACNOA).

The decision resulted from the technical meeting of experts on Youth, Culture and Sports that ended Wednesday (24th) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), which aimed to prepare the meeting of ministers, to be held on Friday (26th), in the same country, where Angola is represented by the minister, Palmira Barbosa.

There was a dispute between the AU and ACNOA about who should take on the organization of the event, an issue duly overcome with the commitment that after the Ghana edition the parties will sit down again to assign responsibility to one of them.

In a communication, this Thursday, in Luanda, the National Director for Sports, Nicolau Daniel, from Addis Ababa, explains that it has always been the responsibility of the UA to organize the multidisciplinary competition, as stipulated in the statutes.

However, he continued, ACNOA must be taken into account as a partner of the states in technical matters for holding events.

He stated that the sports experts recommended to the ministers that after the Games in Ghana a meeting should be held between the parties in order to definitively define the scope of the organization of the African Olympic Games.

As I said, the group of experts recommended that, henceforth, the organizing country should sign a memorandum of understanding with the African Union, to allow sufficient preparation time.

Initially scheduled for Ghana, from August 4 to 19 of this year, the event was transferred to March 8 to 23, 2024 in the same country, according to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

The announcement of the new date came after the organization inspected the facilities that will host the race and held meetings with the main players.

Thus, the games will still remain in Accra`2023, despite the new date in 2024, like Tokyo`2020, more played in 2021.

History

The Pan African Games are a multidisciplinary event that take place every four years, exclusively for athletes from the African continent.

They are organized by the African Union (AU) in collaboration with the Association of African National Olympic Committees (ACNOA).

The founder of the Modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, conceived the Pan-African Games before 1920. However, the colonial powers that governed Africa feared the idea, suspecting that the unifying aspect of sport among Africans could cause conflicts and assert their independence from the colonizers.

Attempts began to present the Games in Algiers (Algeria) in 1925 and Alexandria (Egypt) in 1928, but despite elaborate preparation, the efforts were disapproved.

With the official recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the first African Games only took place in 1965, in Brazzaville (Congo).

The edition that Ghana will host next year could be the starting point for the African event to qualify some sports for the Olympic Games, starting with Paris`2024.

These include badminton, 3-a-side basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, gymnastics, judo, swimming, tennis and table tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
