Africa-Press – Angola. The member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández expressed, this Wednesday, in Luanda, his party’s intention to deepen friendly and cooperative relations with the MPLA.
The information was given to the press by the Cuban ambassador to Angola, Oscar León González, at the end of a meeting between the vice-president of the MPLA, Luísa Damião, and a delegation from the PCC.
According to the diplomat, during the meeting, the PCC leader thanked the MPLA and its activists for the permanent solidarity with the Cuban people, in their fight against the blockade imposed by the United States of America ( USA) for more than 60 years.
“The PCC intends to continue working on strengthening cooperative relations with the MPLA, which is why the vice-president, Luísa Damião, was invited to visit Cuba”, he highlighted.
The MPLA and the PCC have maintained excellent friendly relations since the time of the national liberation struggle.
The historical ties between the two parties are legacies of the first President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto, and the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
History records that an MPLA delegation traveled to Havana, in July 1974, on the occasion of the celebrations of another anniversary of the Assault on the Moncada Barracks.
The delegation carried a message from Agostinho Neto to Fidel Castro, requesting help with military instructors, weapons and financial support.
The mission would open the way for later contacts, which would lead Cuba to help Angola.
Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández has been in the country since Monday for a three-day working visit, as president of the National Popular Assembly of Cuba, aimed at establishing talks with Angolan parliamentarians, within the scope of the historical relations between the two institutions.
