Conservation of historic sites worries Culture Directorate

Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial director of Culture, Tourism and Youth and Sports in Cuanza-Sul, Francisco Ernesto Ventura, appealed, this Monday, in the city of Sumbe, to the need for society to face the preservation of monuments and sites as a daily practice of citizens. .

The official’s appeal arises due to the verification of the degradation of the built and classified heritage assets in several localities of the province.

“We have to promote awareness campaigns in the areas where the monuments and classified sites are located, ensuring that they are preserved and dignified”, said the director, stressing that the importance of valuing and preserving monuments and sites falls to all, and that the collaboration of communities helps in the actions and protection and dissemination of historical and cultural landmarks.

Francisco Ventura underlined that the sector has already outlined a program for the recovery of monuments and sites, which is awaiting funding.

“The state of conservation of monuments and sites is worrying, since the population does not collaborate in their preservation, which is why the Directorate of Culture prepared a program”, he stressed.

He highlighted that monuments and sites constitute cultural wealth of the populations, and that the province has eight recognized monuments and sites, out of 279 registered.

Among the listed monuments and sites, the Fortim do Quicombo, Fortaleza do Sumbe, Chalett Araújo, Fortaleza de Calulo, Sagrada Família Church, Fortaleza da Quibala, Historic Zone of Sumbe and Rock Paintings by Ndalambiri stand out.
