Africa-Press – Angola. Studies on copper prospecting in the commune of Calunda, municipality of Alto Zambeze, in Moxico, present good indicators, assured geologist Marina Tchicanha from the British company AngloAmerican, which carries out exploration work in that region.

According to the technique, geophysical and aerial studies carried out in that geographical area in 2022, confirmed the existence of minerals in that subsoil, with “the challenge now being to know which miner it is, through laboratory tests”.

In addition to the commune of Calunda, which is 44 kilometers from the town of Cazombo, the municipal seat of Alto Zambeze, the prospecting work will cover the region of Macondo, where the logistical conditions are being created to open roads, with the aim of to facilitate the mobility of machines.

The work is being carried out by 50 technicians, including Angolans and foreigners, ensuring that the number of workers may increase, depending on the evolution of the process.

On the occasion, the governor of Moxico, Ernesto Muangala, highlighted the progress of the project, stressing that it will have a positive impact on communities, with the implementation of social actions, in compliance with the Mining Code in force in the country.

He reiterated that in addition to Alto Zambezi, other mining prospecting works are being carried out in the municipalities of Bundas and Luchazes, by the multinational Rio Tinto.

Along with the aforementioned municipalities, most of the regions in the province of Moxico are rich in water resources, according to preliminary studies by Planageo, having an intricate mineral wealth in their subsoils, while the climate and terrain conditions, due to the vast chana, they provide crops such as rice, massango, sweet potatoes, cassava, corn, beans, tomatoes and peanuts.

The municipality of Alto Zambezi, in particular, is located in a strategic area rich in copper mining, cobalt extraction and other metals.
