Angola needs to win against Malawi on Tuesday (24) with impressive numbers, in the 3rd and final match of Group A of the 2025 Cosafa women football championship, which is taking place in South-Africa, to improve the goal difference and hope to qualify for the semi-finals as the best 2nd-placed team among all groups.
With the defeat, on Saturday (21), against the host South Africa, by 0-2, in a match of the 2nd round, played at Seshego Stadium, the “Welwitschias” (Angola’s nick name) are in 3rd position in the group, with 3 points, resulting from a balance of three goals scored and three conceded.
With 6 points, the South Africans are already qualified for the next phase, thanks to victories over Angola and Malawi, benefiting from the tiebreaker criterion in the direct confrontation.
Thus, to guarantee qualification, Angola must beat Malawi by a large margin and hope that the 2nd-placed team in Group B, Zimbabwe, drops points or finishes with a lower goal difference.
Also on Saturday, Malawi thrashed Lesotho 8-1, in what has been, so far, the most emphatic victory of the competition.
The competition rules stipulate that only the best 2nd-placed team from the three groups (A, B, and C) advances to the semi-finals.
