Africa-Press – Angola. Since Saturday, two officers of the National Police have been part of the contingent of personnel of the United Nations Peace Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), a fact that marks Angola’s debut in such activities. Both will serve a year of service.

These are Chief Superintendent José Valente Pimpão and Intendant Sarita Domingos Tomás de Almeida, who were selected from the training of police officers, promoted by the Police Division of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, from 14 to 25 February this year. , at the Ankara Police Academy, Republic of Turkey. The deployment of PN officers to UNMISS follows the contacts between the Police Division of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Permanent Mission of Angola to the UN in New York, in the light of the Law on the Dispatch of Military Contingents and Angolan Paramilitaries to the Peacekeeping Missions Abroad approved by the National Assembly in May 2021.

As a result of these contacts, as part of the materialization of the Executive’s intention regarding the insertion of Angolan staff in international organizations, in October 2021, Angola received a visit from the United Nations delegation, headed by the UN Under-Secretary for Peace Operations, Jean -Pierre Lacroix, made up of military advisers, Lieutenant General Birame Diop, and politician Gueladio Ba.

During the visit, Angola expressed its willingness to join UN peacekeeping missions, having requested insertion in the Peace Readiness and Capacity Intervention System (PCRS), in the structures of the Office of Military Affairs and the United Nations Police Division. , gender participation (in accordance with Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security).

Inserting female personnel from the Angolan Armed Forces and the Angolan National Police in international missions and structures, as well as providing technical assistance (UN Advisory) in the formation and operation of a Center of Excellence for Training in Peace Support Operations, carrying out assistance and control visits, with a view to certifying forces, pre-deployment trips and assistance in analyzing lessons learned. For the permanent representative of the Angola Mission to the UN, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, “the achievement is a reason for rejoicing for the country that, for the first time, starts to contribute to Peacekeeping activities at an international level, under the aegis of the United Nations”.

According to the ambassador, this, in a way, will promote the visibility of Angola “as a contributing country with police and, later, with troops, depending on the decision of the competent authorities”.
