Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Representatives of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO), Fátima Jardim, presented the International Coalition for Territorial Governance of Food Systems, an instrument to the achievement of world food security.
In 2021, the CPLP proposed to the United Nations, at the 76th UN General Assembly, the creation of an “international coalition” to promote sustainable territorial food systems.
In the official presentation, which took place last Monday (30th), the Angolan Ambassador to Italy said that this instrument results from the recommendations of the III Ordinary Meeting of the CPLP Food and Nutritional Security Council (CONSAN-CPLP), held in July 2021, in Luanda.
According to a note this Tuesday, “the main objective of this international coalition is to reinforce the structure of multilevel governance for sustainable food systems”.
The project’s objectives also include prioritizing the governance of territorial food systems on the political agenda and sharing experiences.
“This collegiate body is available to all UN member states and poses challenges to us in reaffirming our commitments, with the principles of transforming food systems”, asserts the Angolan diplomat.
For Fátima Jardim, one of the major objectives is centered on new aspirations for resilience and improved food and nutrition security, as well as reducing the impact of crises, achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as mitigating, as much as possible, , hunger, poverty and improve fundamental rights”.
According to the Angolan diplomat, there is an increasing need to introduce mechanisms, plans and actions for the stability of economies and the resilience of food systems so affected by the financial, energy and climate change crises that hinder well-being and progress .
The Angolan representative reaffirmed that the Angolan Government supports the initiative and recognizes the diversity of the territories, as well as their specific natural and social capital, committing itself to help boost the International Coalition for the Promotion of Sustainable Territorial Food Systems.
On the occasion, the President of the FAO Food Security Committee, Manuel Ferrero, considered the International Coalition for the Territorial Governance of Food Systems as an important body, having expressed his readiness to engage in the growth of this collegial body.
The representations at FAO, namely from Argentina, Canada, Cote d’Ivoire, India, Italy, Uruguay, Qatar, France, Spain, Greece, Romania and Kenya, in unison, expressed their readiness to collaborate for the growth of the of this international coalition on food security.
