Africa-Press – Angola. The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) reaffirmed, in New York, its commitment to multilingualism and the principle of parity between the six languages ​​of the United Nations.

Speaking on behalf of the CPLP at the 12th plenary meeting of the fourth commission, last Thursday, the permanent representative of the Republic of Angola, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, welcomed the efforts of the Department of Global Communication (DCG) to prioritize multilingualism throughout your job.

“In view of the critical and challenging global context, the CPLP praises the fundamental role played by the DCG in supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda”, he said.

Maria de Jesus Ferreira stressed that the CPLP welcomes the DCG’s ongoing efforts to expand its digital reach on key topics such as the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action and peacekeeping.

According to the ambassador, the CPLP notes that the new digital media and traditional media platforms are essential to facilitate the provision of services more effectively, rejoicing in the use of social networks as a vital vehicle to reach a global audience, especially young people.

In connection with the “Verified” campaign, the community encourages the DCG in its engagement in positioning United Nations content as a source of accurate and credible information for the global public good and expanding its efforts to combat disinformation in other areas such as climate change and hate speech.

The CPLP reiterates its support for the actions of the DCG in leading responses to crisis communication at the national and global levels, including the fight against disinformation, praising the efforts to support the United Nations agenda on sustainable development, peace and security, human rights and other challenges faced.

The community reiterates its commitment to pursuing its objectives of disseminating information on UN activities in Portuguese.

Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste are the nine member states of the CPLP.
