Africa-Press – Angola. The Estrelas em Palco Group, from Cuando province, won the fourth edition of the Huíla International Theater Festival (FestOndjila) on Sunday in Lubango with the play “Caminho do Mato,” based on a poem by Agostinho Neto.
The staged play portrays the trajectory of Angola’s first president, from his youth through political activism and the struggle for national liberation, until his death in 1979, highlighting his legacy as a doctor, poet, and revolutionary leader.
The group received a prize of 235,000 kwanzas. They also won awards for best show, best costume, and best actor.
Twelve of the 14 invited groups participated in the event, including a collective from Namibia. The group from Cape Verde, also scheduled to attend, was unable to attend due to administrative issues.
Amilton Tchinguelessi, director of the host theater group Ondjila, said the festival exceeded expectations, considering the participation of local and other groups.
He emphasized that theater is a performing art that fosters social and community education, reinforcing the importance of FestOndjila as a space for cultural exchange and strengthening national identity.
The event, which also marked the 50th anniversary of National Independence and has established itself as a benchmark in the Angolan theater scene, continues to encourage artistic creation and dialogue between African cultures.
