Africa-Press – Angola. The “Corredor do Cuanza”, the genre of music and dance “Semba” were recently elevated to national historical and cultural heritage, revealed this Tuesday in Luanda, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Filipe Zau.

The government official who was speaking at the opening of the round table on the safeguarding of Angola’s cultural, material and immaterial heritage, in reference to the International Day for Monuments and Sites that is celebrated, added that the Dikanza (musical instrument) and Bessangana (typical clothing of Luanda) were also elevated to the same category.

For Filipe Zau, this heritage makes the country proud of preserving a variety of cultural assets that represent one of the greatest cultural and human riches of any society.

“The more than three hundred properties classified throughout the country, the recent candidacy of the Sona for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as the various interventions for the recovery of public and private buildings classified as national historical and cultural heritage are good examples of the efforts made by the Angolan government”, he said.

Filipe Zau added that it is necessary to recognize the responsibility of public and private entities that, through lectures, thematic exhibitions and periodical publications, help in the dissemination and recognition of the vast heritage and cultural sites of Angola.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was established in 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMS) and approved by UNESCO the following year, with the aim of raising awareness among Member States to diversify, protect and conserve cultural heritage.

Angola has more than 278 classified monuments and sites.
