Death Toll Caused by Floods in Benguela Rises to Eight

Africa-Press – Angola. The death toll from the devastating floods caused by the overflowing of the Cavaco River in Benguela province has risen to eight, according to an update released Monday by the Provincial Government.

In a press release, following the second meeting to assess the state of emergency in the municipality of Benguela, chaired by Governor Manuel Nunes Júnior, authorities reported three more fatalities.

The Provincial Government of Benguela also reported that the number of displaced people has increased from 4,500 to approximately 9,000, most of whom have been resettled in the campsite in the municipality of Navegantes, where all necessary conditions are being created.

The meeting aimed to assess the evolution of the situation over the last 24 hours and adjust the response measures underway on the ground.

During the meeting, held behind closed doors, new data were presented that confirm the worsening of the human impact of the tragedy, with the number of deaths rising to eight, as well as the situation related to the thousands of affected families.

Despite the size of the damage, the technical assessment points to a tendency towards normalization in most of the affected neighborhoods, due to the reduction in the intensity of the rains and the effectiveness of the first drainage operations carried out by the mobilized teams.

As part of the reinforcement of the drainage infrastructure, it was also announced the completion of works on the Hôndio river, in the municipality of Caimbambo, and its entry into operation on Tuesday, to reduce the risk of new floods and improve rainwater drainage in that area.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, as well as technical teams from the companies OMATAPALO, CONDURIL and others involved in the ongoing operations.

The Provincial Government of Benguela guarantees that it will continue to monitor the situation permanently and appealed for the population to remain calm, as well as for strict compliance with the guidelines issued by civil protection teams.
