Africa-Press – Angola. The vice-governor for Technical Services and Infrastructure in Lunda Sul, Cláudio Pemessa, yesterday recommended speedier work on cleaning the drainage ditches in the city of Saurimo.

At this time, work is underway in different districts of the city of Saurimo to rehabilitate drainage ditches and to level the dikes to protect against flooding in the city of Saurimo.

The works being carried out by the administration of Saurimo, in partnership with the provincial office for Infrastructure and Technical Services, aim to allow the rapid drainage of rainwater, to avoid flooding and material damage, especially in this rainy season.

Speaking to the press, at the end of the field visit made by the governor of Lunda Sul, Daniel Neto, the official said that more efforts should be made to ensure that rainwater follows its normal course.

He underlined that one of the city’s main problems is the technical difficulties of the drainage system in existing ditches, which has led to large floods whenever heavy rains fall.

He stated that with the completion of the cleaning work on the drainage channels, the functionality of the dikes, basic sanitation conditions and also urban mobility will be improved.

ravines

Four ravines located in the neighborhoods Luavur, Candembe B, Fina and Sacombe, in the municipality of Saurimo (Lunda Sul), threaten to “swallow” some houses located nearby, if there is no immediate intervention.

The ravines, 80 to 100 meters long and 25 to 30 meters deep, can dislodge and cause deaths of families in the said neighborhoods, as they continue to spread with the rains that have fallen in recent days.

Reacting to this fact, in a field visit made by the governor of Lunda Sul, Daniel Neto, the deputy governor for Technical Services and Infrastructure, Cláudio Pemessa, said that the spreading of some ravines are the result of the obstruction of the passages hydraulic systems and the lack of maintenance and conservation.

For an immediate resolution, he said, a feasibility study has already been carried out for medium and short-term palliative interventions.

He considered the situation “critical”, as it requires urgent intervention to reduce the progression of the ravines, pending the implementation of the containment project by the relevant Ministry.

The minister made it known that the municipal administration is working to remove populations residing in risk areas, placing them in areas of greater security, through the distribution of plots of land and delivery of materials.

The province of Lunda Sul has more than 30 ravines, of which 20 are of greater concern, as they are close to populations, roads, water treatment plants and other public buildings.
