Eastern Region needs 60 judges

Africa-Press – Angola. Sixty judges is the number that the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), in the eastern region of the country, needs to meet the sector’s demand in the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte.

The information was released Thursday, in Saurimo, by the deputy attorney general of the Republic and coordinator of the eastern judicial region, Astrigildo Culolo.

The magistrate was speaking at the 3rd annual review meeting of the activities carried out by the PGR in the three provinces that make up the eastern region of the Angolan territory.

Given the size of the aforementioned provinces, each of them needs 20 magistrates, according to the official.

The East region has only 36 public prosecutors, 16 in Lunda Sul, 10 in Lunda Norte and 12 in Moxico.

He said that it was necessary to improve the internal organisation, in order to be constantly up to the challenges that arise, within the framework of the socio-economic dynamics of the country.

He added that in addition to the traditional functions of directing instruction and exercising criminal action, the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) also has a relevant role in other areas, such as the family.

The magistrate asked the Executive to continuously support the PM, providing the necessary information to act before the courts in defense of the treasury, in the event of non-compliance with contracts and other harmful acts to the common good.

Artrigildo Culolo considered it essential to pay due attention to the issue of illegal immigration in eastern Angola, which is linked to the exploitation and trafficking of strategic minerals.

As for the fight against corruption and impunity, he added that the PGR is committed to the fight, having called for the improvement of working conditions for all actors in the judiciary sector.

For the year 2023, he said that the dissemination of laws would be a priority, with the aim of raising society’s legal awareness, interacting with organizations that work in these areas.

He referred that the PGR will continue to work to ensure the dignity of magistrates, justice technicians and administrative employees, through the improvement and modernization of working conditions.

The MP promised to pay special attention to the appreciation and constant improvement of the institution’s staff, with a regular training program for magistrates, justice technicians and administrative employees.
