Africa-Press – Angola. Governmental, judicial, political, religious, traditional and civil society entities paid tribute to the Founder of the Nation on the centenary of the birth of the first President of the Republic, António Agostinho Neto, on 17 September 1922, in the village of Kaxicane.

During this Saturday’s provincial act, which marked the National Hero’s Day, the deputy governor for the Infrastructure Sector, Elmano Inácio, laid a wreath next to the statue of the Founder of the Nation, placed in Largo Dr. Augustine Neto.

At the ceremony, he said that the Angolan nation should remember the figure of Neto, as he is a politician of international dimension, a man who, in addition to proclaiming Angola’s independence, fought against the colonization of the African continent in the company of other nationalists.

“He worked hard for the people of Angola to experience this freedom and peace. All generations should get to know President Agostinho Neto through various demonstrations that exalt the unavoidable figure in the history of our country”, he reinforced.

Agostinho Jaka, the first provincial commissioner of Huambo appointed by President Agostinho Neto and who was also present at the event, recalled the former statesman as an icon of National Independence: “For me, Neto was a guide to the Angolan revolution, because everything that he said is what is practiced until today. At this moment, we are looking for many examples of Neto so that we can act in all sectors of society”.

Another veteran of the country and former commissioner of the municipalities of Londuimbali, Ucuma and Caála, João Baptista Tombo, said that Neto was one of the dearest children of Angola and what he taught still serves as a lesson for the new generations: “He taught us the courage to not to be afraid in the face of dangers and to seek various forms of dialogue between men”.
