European Union extends aid to drought-hit areas for two more years

Africa-Press – Angola. The European Union will extend, for another two years, the financing of food and nutritional aid actions for the populations of the areas affected by the drought in the south of the country, within the framework of the program “Strengthening Resilience and Food and Nutritional Security in Angola (FRESAN )”.

According to the Portuguese ambassador, whose Instituto Camões is the manager of this program of the Angolan Government financed by the European Union, the extension of the period has to do with the fact that the current program is producing satisfactory results for the fulfillment of the established objectives.

Francisco Rui Duarte said, after a FRESAN meeting on Friday, in Ondjiva, Cunene, that the positive impact of the first actions recommended its consolidation, particularly the results achieved with the food and nutritional security of the population affected by the drought in the South from Angola.

“A proposal will be presented to the Delegation of the European Union in Angola for this program to be extended until August 2025”, reinforced the Portuguese diplomat, while the delegate of the European Union in the country, Jeannette Seppen, considered FRESAN a success, hoping that they will be achieved all the goals set after the signs shown so far.

In turn, the Minister of Economy and Planning, Mário Caetano João, highlighted that FRESAN “is a palpable example in the implementation of the 17th Sustainable Development Goal”, stressing that the achievement of results depends on partnerships.

According to the minister, Angola is changing its development paradigm through solid partnerships, especially with the private sector and civil society.

As part of the bilateral partnership between the European Union and Angola, the FRESAN program is financed by the European Union with 65 million euros in the period from 2018 to 2024. The initiative, jointly with the Government of Angola, aims to reduce hunger, poverty and the vulnerability of communities affected by drought in the south of the country, in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla and Namibe. The program’s actions are aimed at the sustainable strengthening of family farming.
