Africa-Press – Angola. The Executive launched yesterday, in Luanda, the second edition of the National Prize for Human Rights, for the nomination of four categories, namely, Personality of the Year, Research in Human Rights, Community and Humanitarian Actions, and Culture of Peace and Citizenship.
The Secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship, Ana Celeste Januário, said that registration runs until January 31, 2023 and the results of the winners in the categories will be released in April of the same year.
The official of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights explained that the Personality of the Year categories aim to honor individuals who deserve special attention in actions or conduct in activities for the protection and promotion of Human Rights and Citizenship.
The second category of the award is dedicated to Research in Human Rights, which aims to recognize studies, research, scientific works, documentaries, articles and other initiatives that have a support of information and communication developed at national level that deserve a special mention for the deepening of the reflection on Human Rights and Citizenship.
Community and Humanitarian Actions are part of the third category of the award, which aims to distinguish local associations that work in the field and deserve substantial emphasis in their actions and activities carried out at community level, in the field of Human Rights and Citizenship.
The last category is dedicated to the Culture of Peace and Citizenship. It aims to distinguish natural and legal persons, public entities for their actions or activities and that have a relevant contribution in the fight against domestic violence, in the increase of the culture of peace in the Angolan society.
Ana Celeste Januário mentioned that the award to the winners will be symbolic and that the monetary values vary between 300,000.00 kwanzas and 1,000,000.00 kwanzas. “This is how the awardees and the nominees will be entitled to a trophy, a statuette, as a symbol of the award, a pecuniary bonus, an award certificate, for each category, signed by His Excellency the Minister of Justice and Human Rights”, she said.
All citizens who have actions and recognize their activities as falling into one of these categories can compete for the prize. Public institutions are limited to participating in the contest.
According to the Secretary of State, the idea of the award is, above all, a distinction that wants to recognize the actions of civil society, reiterating that the other limitation is time. She recalled that the award was approved in April 2020, by Presidential Decree, and stems from the application of the National Human Rights Strategy, a policy instrument of the Executive.
“The central objective of our strategy, the National Human Rights Strategy, is to reach the age of majority in Human Rights matters, which consists of endogenous capacity, internal capacity to promote, defend and protect Human Rights”, he said, underlining that Human Rights have been elevated to the category of a National Security issue and that the Ministry collects information through committees installed in the country’s various provinces, municipalities and communes.
In the first edition, the award was given in July 2022, and in the Personality of the Year category, the African Commissioner for Human and Peoples’ Rights, Maria Teresa Manuela, won for her work on Human Rights in Angola and beyond. borders.
In the Research category, in the field of Human Rights and also in the Culture of Peace and Citizenship, the two awards were taken by the Center for Human Rights and Citizenship, of the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Angola, for their scientific work and the promotion of peace. that developed over the period.
In the category of Community and Humanitarian Actions, in the first edition, it was won by the Rural Development and Environment Association (ADRA Angola), with a project developed in the south of Angola.
From yesterday until January 31, 2023, different activities will be carried out to publicize the award, through the pages on the social networks of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, also by public notice in large-print bodies, said Ana Celeste Januário.
