Africa-Press – Angola. The exhibition “Imbambas: Unsettled Feelings of Object & Self”, by the Angolan artist Januário Jano, was considered one of the best of the month of January, according to FAD Magazine, London’s contemporary art magazine.
“A fabric sculpture hanging from the ceiling and a photograph of a pair of shoes are linked, as both items are based on the concept of interaction with bodies. It is part of Januário Jano’s program that analyzes the links with colonialism in his Angola Natal, including religion and traditions that were shaped by the Portuguese and how they evolved after independence”, writes the magazine’s art critic.
Open from the 7th of January to the 5th of February, the exhibition focuses on the term imbambas, which in Kimbundu means “things”. According to information provided by the artist, this is his first solo exhibition with Galeria Kristin Hjellegjerde. Starting with the term imbambas, which refers to things like furniture and bags that have an intrinsic and mysterious relationship to the body and to oneself. Although the artworks are aesthetically diverse, incorporating different materialities and contexts, they share a powerful presence. that resonates in time and space to present a deep contemplation of the object’s role in the construction and reinforcement of cultural identity.
Born in Luanda, Januário Jano is a visual artist who lives and works between Luanda, Lisbon and London. Since graduating from London Metropolitan University, England, in 2005, the artist has been involved in research projects that have been the focus of his artistic work.
