Africa-Press – Angola. Under the program to relaunch wheat cultivation in Chicuma commune, in Ganda municipality (Benguela), local farmers forecast a harvest of 5,000 tonnes of this cereal by July this year.

According to the head of the municipal Office for Studies, Planning and Statistics, João Kafiele, 20 tonnes of wheat seed were distributed to 750 families, under the said programme.

João Kafiele referred that this initiative aims to reduce the costs of importing this important product for the population’s diet.

In the same vein, he informed that local and provincial authorities have already identified some national producers willing to invest in the production, processing and distribution of wheat.

On the other hand, he spoke about the process of re-launching the production of Arabica coffee, where a project is emerging in the town of Cassipeira, in which farmers were awarded 46,000 seedlings of this species of red berry and a space is being identified for the creation of a nursery.

For this project, the official said that 500 families are involved.

The official also made it known that, within the scope of emergency infrastructure, earthworks are planned for 350 kilometers of the road between the municipalities of Capala and Casseque, linking the wheat and coffee production areas, in order to facilitate the disposal of these products to the market.

He announced the completion, later this year, of the rehabilitation works on the facilities of the former Municipal Commission of Ganda, which are at an advanced level of physical execution.

João Kafiele also referred to the recent asphalting of the main streets in the urban core of the municipal seat, over a length of 10.8 kilometres, and the recovery of sidewalks and public lighting poles, achievements that make the population very proud.

He informed that a project for the creation of model cooperatives for young people is also underway, which aims at the distribution and rearing of pigs and chickens, in an extension of 12 hectares that are already being prepared for the purpose.
