First phase of the Cabinda Refinery ends in December

Africa-Press – Angola. The first phase of construction work at the Cabinda Refinery will be completed next December, according to the director general of GEMCORP, Marcus Weyll, who is in charge of the project.

The information was provided at a press conference in Cabinda, during the visit of the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo.

Marcus Weyll informed, on the occasion, that the works of the first phase are in 26% of physical execution and 100% of the financial part.

He clarified that all Refinery equipment is already in place (Malembo Plain), as well as seven (7) of the eighteen (18) reservoir tanks that will be subsequently assembled.

After verifying the evolution of the works, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, considered it important to have verified compliance with the schedule for the implementation of the Refinery.

He referred that the schedule for the implementation of the factory includes the recruitment of personnel and the training of technicians.

“We came to the field to assess the project’s implementation stage and give the press and civil society the opportunity to (…) see what is being done”, said the minister.

First phase of the Cabinda Refinery

The implementation of the first phase of construction of the Cabinda Refinery foresees, among others, the construction of a crude oil distillation unit with a capacity of 30 thousand barrels of oil per day.

This unit has the specificity of not burning gas, being one of the first in Africa with this feature.

Between the construction, assembly and operation of the Refinery, 1,500 jobs will be created. Most of which are destined for the population of Cabinda.

Currently, more than 500 direct and indirect jobs have been created, of which 93 percent are Angolan staff, 83 of which are from Cabinda province.

Tests are currently underway that will lead to the recruitment of the first staff who will work directly in the Refinery’s operations.

The factory will have a processing capacity of 60,000 barrels/day when fully operational.
