The former President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, accompanied by his family, arrived in Luanda, after his release, following demarches made by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço. A note from the Presidency of the Republic of Angola confirms that the Bongo family was released this week, following demarches made by the Angolan President and the African Union with his Gabonese counterpart, Brice Oling Nguema.
On Monday, João Lourenço held a brief courtesy meeting with Ali Bongo Ondimba in Libreville, Gabon, on the sidelines of an official visit of a few hours to that country, during which he met with Brice Oling Nguema and the two countries signed an agreement in the cultural field.
Ali Bongo Ondimba, 66, was President of Gabon from 2009 to 2023. Before that, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991 and Minister of Defense from 1999 to 2009. After the death of his father, President Omar Bongo, he ran for and won the 2009 elections. In 2016, he was re-elected for a second term.
