Africa-Press – Angola. General Paulo Lara died, Tuesday (22), in the city of Porto-Portugal, a victim of illness, at the age of 65. He is part of the group of Angolans who, from a very early age, engaged in the struggle for National Liberation, committed by his father, the late nationalist LĂșcio Lara, standing out in several missions given to the country.

Due to the political and military circumstances in which it was involved, the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the MPLA, in this moment of pain and great consternation, bows before the memory of Comrade Paulo Lara, and addresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

“The death of General Paulo Lara represents the loss of one of the most brilliant sons of Angola, who dedicated the best years of his life to her, as well as the disappearance of an illustrious intellectual concerned with the preservation of the collective memory of the Angolan People”, underlines, in a note, the Political Bureau.

General Paulo Pfluger Barreto Lara became involved body and soul in the cause of Angolan nationalism, through his inseparable walk with his father, the late nationalist LĂșcio Lara. Paulo Lara has an impeccable record of services rendered to the Angolan Nation, standing out in Organs military bodies, where he began his career in 1972, in the province of Cabinda, as a guerrilla of the MPLA, having fulfilled his missions and functions with an exemplary sense of discipline and organization.

The Political Bureau recognizes his role, at the time, as a former pioneer of the MPLA, and later as a founding member of the Tchiweka Documentation Association. “General Paulo Lara was fearless and respected, also standing out for the research he carried out on the period of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation and as a mentor and director of the “Trilhos da IndependĂȘncia” Project, which aimed to collect and preserve relevant documents from the memory of the period in Angola’s history and the struggle of all peoples under colonial occupation.

The general was trained in Military Sciences and International Relations, having dedicated himself to teaching.
