Africa-Press – Angola. The Government of Cuanza-Norte may terminate, later this year, the contract for the operation of the poultry farm in the municipality of Lucala.
The Lucala poultry farm, which is abandoned and in a state of degradation, has been awarded to Angolan businessmen since 2020.
Speaking to the press, Friday, after the visit to the infrastructure, the governor of Cuanza- Norte gave an ultimatum until Monday for businesspeople to justify the reasons for the underutilization of the project.
He stressed that if they are found to be incapable, the project will be passed on to another investor who has already been identified and is ready to make the infrastructure more useful.
In addition to abandonment, business owners do not comply with contractual terms, especially the failure to carry out improvements to the enterprise and failure to pay periodic rents to the State for more than four years.
The governor hopes that investors will respond positively to the province’s needs for food production, employment promotion and development of the local economy.
For the person responsible, the act of abandoning the project is highly reprehensible, an attitude that drops the State’s investment, in favor of strengthening the population’s food chain, reducing imports and developing the national economy.
For his part, the provincial director of the Integrated Economic Cabinet of Cuanza-Norte, Humberto Mesquita, clarified that the enterprise consists of a universe of 26 poultry farms, equipped with 20 spaces each, implemented in 2012, as part of a Government investment with the financing from South Korea, budgeted at 68 million dollars.
He explained that the project included the production of eggs, slaughter chickens, a feed factory and a slaughterhouse with the capacity to produce 30 tons of chicken meat/day.
He informed that as a result of the global financial crisis, associated with the Covid-19 phenomenon, the project experienced some difficulties and was subsequently halted.
In an attempt to reverse the situation, the Government of Cuanza Norte granted the right to explore to some national businessmen who have proven incapable of following through. This situation, he stressed, should force local authorities to adopt measures that ensure the useful use of the project.
Humberto Mesquita reported that of the 26 poultry complexes, only one is in operation and the other is in the process of being restored, by the Caixa Social das Forças Armadas.
