Africa-Press – Angola. The spokesperson for the National Police, Mateus Rodrigues, defended this Tuesday, in Luanda, the need for greater involvement of all citizens in actions aimed at repressing crime in the country, in order to guarantee security and tranquility public.

The official participated in the debate on the “challenges and solutions for reducing crime in Angola”, promoted by the “Knowledge Workshop”, an initiative by university professor and political analyst Osvaldo Mboco.

According to Mateus Rodrigues, citizens are called to participate in the process of preventing and combating crime by reporting cases and observing security measures on a daily basis.

According to the official, there is a reduction in cases of violence in the country, giving as an example the possibility of, in some areas, citizens walking with their belongings in their hands, including cell phones, and the existence of some commercial networks that operate without armed security.

The spokesperson emphasized, however, that Angola is a safe country, taking into account that the Constitution of the Republic ensures the guarantee and security of people and their property.

Taking a look at the trajectory of the National Police, Mateus Rodrigues said that until 2002, the country had a militarized corporation, the result of years of armed conflict that ended with the signing of the peace and national reconciliation agreement, on April 4 of the same year.

“Today we have a police force that is closer to citizens and is also guided by pedagogy in its daily activities”, he stressed.

On the occasion, university professor Alcântara Costa considered it essential to reinforce the police in terms of men and equipment, to put an end to criminal actions.

“Unfortunately, our Police have not been served as they should in terms of support”, stated the teacher, for whom the corporation should also have drones and more cameras.

According to the professor, the police have one thousand and forty cameras installed, but, to cover the country, they need at least two hundred thousand.

Corroborating the idea, psychologist Mário de Lemos said that there are many factors that lead individuals to crime, including the environment and social issues.

For this reason, he considered it essential that his solution materializes in a multisectoral way, with the involvement of all fringes of society.

Present at the debate, jurist Joaquim Jaime spoke of the need to review the Constitution, to create a police force with much more power and give greater autonomy to public prosecutors and judges.

The Knowledge Workshop was created in 2018, by a group of Angolan academics, with the aim of encouraging, sharing and disseminating information and knowledge on various topics of national and international interest.
