Africa-Press – Angola. It appears to be Gaborone United’s (GU) league title to win as the championship approaches its midpoint. It might be an early call to make but the Reds are on song this campaign as rivals continue to stumble.

It was purported to be a four-horse race at the start of the 2021/2022 competition, with GU, their cross town rivals, Township Rollers, Orapa United and holders Jwaneng Galaxy all in the favourites’ mix. However after 10 games, GU sit on 27 points, this is almost a half of local league winning points, which stands at an average of 60 to 66.

The team has lost just once this campaign, having the best scoring record with 23 goals whilst they have conceded just three, which is the least of the 16 Premier League teams. As the league action roared to life for the first time in the new year, the Reds maintained their spot at the top with a hard fought 1-0 over Gilport Lions on Saturday afternoon.

On his debut, Thero Setsile came off the bench to assist Tshepo Malgas’ 82nd minute goal. Holders, Galaxy were at the same time, shocked by Security Systems in a 2-1 loss while Rollers were held to a 1-1 draw by Morupule Wanderers. Rollers and Galaxy are now in unfamiliar fifth and seventh places respectively. As the pair continue to fumble, Orapa United pose a serious threat to GU title charge. The Ostriches beat Mahalapye Railway Highlanders 2-0 on Sunday to move to third.

The team is five points behind the GU, having played a game less. In second place is BDF XI with 25 points, just two behind the leaders. However Matebele have played three games more than GU. Newbies, Sua Flamingoes are the surprise package as they moved to fourth place with a 1-0 over Police XI over the weekend.

At the bottom, Extension Gunners registered their fourth win of the season with a 1-0 win over Notwane to move to 11th spot as Toronto reel in 13th. Highlanders remain the only team without a league win, and alongside Fighters and Prisons XI, the trio is in relegation places. Meanwhile, tomorrow (Tuesday) GU face a stern test against Orapa United away at the Itekeng Stadium. Masitaoka and Systems will face off at the National Stadium while Otse Stadium will host a tie between BDF XI and Highlanders.
