Guterres expresses appreciation for João Lourenço's political efforts for peace in the region

Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, this Sunday, expressed appreciation for the political efforts of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in favor of peace and security in the Grandes Region, to reduce tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in the Rwanda.

Angola has sought to mediate the tension between Rwanda and the DRC, within the scope of a mandate given to Luanda by the African Union at the recent summit held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

On 31 May, President João Lourenço discussed with President Tshisekhedi “issues relating to the growing tension” between the DRC and Rwanda, having discussed “various aspects that can contribute to the peaceful resolution of the dispute between the two States”.

Last week, the Angolan Head of State also conveyed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, his concern with the situation in the relationship between those two countries, “which justifies the urgent holding of the Luanda Summit, between the mediator Angola” and the respective Heads of State.

According to a statement by the spokesman for the UN Secretary, Farhan Haq, released today, and quoted by Lusa, the Secretary-General of the United Nations also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, on behalf of the peace and security in the region.

Relations between the DRC and Rwanda have been experiencing moments of crisis since the mass arrival in the east of the DRC of Rwandan Hutus accused of having massacred the Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

After a period of diplomatic calm, the conflict intensified again at the end of last month, when the Government of Kinshasa summoned the Rwandan ambassador to denounce the country’s alleged support for the M23.
