Head of State announces connection of Cabinda to the national electricity grid

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, announced, this Tuesday, in Dallas, United States of America (USA), that the province of Cabinda will be the 11th to be connected to the national electricity grid.

Speaking at the High-Level Dialogue on Sustainable Growth and Africa’s Energy Future, as part of the 16th US-Africa Business Summit, the Angolan statesman said that, in this way, Cabinda will no longer depend on fossil fuels to produce electrical energy.

For João Lourenço, this is yet another demonstration that Angola’s contribution to the energy transition is already happening and that, with some success, it is reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere in the process of producing electrical energy.

He noted that 74 percent of the energy produced in Angola is already from a source that does not depend on fossil fuels, with energy production dominating from hydroelectric sources, followed by photovoltaics.

In this sense, he informed those present that the country has three hydroelectric dams and is building the largest of them, which is Caculo Cabaça.

Currently, he stated, the production volume is above six thousand megawatts and the challenge, although the country remains concerned about increasing production, is to get this energy to the majority of Angolan consumers, through transmission lines.

He recalled that, of the country’s 18 provinces, only 10 are connected to the national grid.

João Lourenço said that the other challenge is the need to contribute with this energy production to reduce the deficit of this product in the southern region of the African continent.

Therefore, he made it known that Angola is working with the private sector and credit institutions to finance the energy transmission line that will connect the SADC grid, from the town of Ruacaná, in Namibia, with around 400 kilometers of extension.

It is also inviting private investors to invest in a line of around 1,300 kilometers to bring energy from the Kwanza Basin to neighboring countries, such as Zambia and the DRC, as well as to the Lobito Corridor.

President João Lourenço is among the African government entities invited to the summit, which will discuss, for four days, solutions to boost commercial cooperation between North Americans and Africans.

The summit is an initiative that aims to discuss effective solutions to boost sustainable commercial partnerships between the USA and the African continent, which is increasingly strategic and a priority in the foreign policy of the North American Administration.

The main objective of the meeting is to enable African leaders to directly contact government and private sector decision-makers in order to promote sustainable business partnerships between the US and Africans.

The organization of the summit plans to bring to the table topics of capital importance for strengthening mutually advantageous business partnerships, with particular emphasis on the agribusiness sector.

It is expected that African countries will establish bridges and partnerships to give greater consistency to their development projects, attracting US investors to agricultural fields, one of the main drivers of growth for the continent’s economies.

The 16th US-Africa Business Summit serves to delve deeper into the issue of available financing options, through the US Government and institutional investors, as well as North American and African banks.
