Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço inaugurated on Friday (19), in Luanda, the Science and Technology Park (PCTL), a strategic facility designed to boost scientific research, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship in Angola.
Accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, the Head of State performed the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the complex’s entry into operation, and was subsequently briefed on its key capabilities and areas of activity.
Located in the Maianga urban district, near the Agostinho Neto University’s Faculties of Social Sciences and Engineering, the undertaking covers an area of approximately 70,000 square meters and comprises 9 specialized buildings dedicated to research, training, and technological development.
With a budget of approximately USD 100 million, the project was funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) covering about 90% of the cost and the Angolan State, which provided the remaining 10.
The park features a scientific research center, specialized labs, research hubs, a tech business incubator, areas for established companies, a scientific library, a 250-seat auditorium, offices, a commercial area, restaurants, a research greenhouse, sports facilities, and extensive green spaces.
The facility also incorporates sustainable technological solutions, including solar energy systems, electric vehicle charging stations, modern digital platforms, and a parking lot with a capacity for approximately 600 vehicles.
Direct beneficiaries of the project include Agostinho Neto University, the National Scientific Research Center, the National Institute for the Promotion of the Information Society, and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Agency, as well as startups and technology-based companies.
The mission of the PCTL is to strengthen the national scientific research system, promote innovation and technology transfer, support the creation of innovative companies, attract technology investment, and contribute to the diversification of the national economy.
In the current year’s May, President João Lourenço authorized the creation of the park’s management entity, which will operate as a public company.
As a member of the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation, the Luanda Science and Technology Park joins an international network of research and innovation centers, opening up new prospects for scientific and technological cooperation with institutions in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Presented by the executive branch as a decisive step toward consolidating a knowledge-based economy in Angola, the initiative aims to bring together universities, researchers, companies, and investors within an integrated ecosystem of innovation and technological development.
