The Head of State, João Lourenço, addressed, this Monday, a message of condolences to his counterpart in São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, due to the death of the former São Tomé President, Evaristo Espírito Santo Carvalho, which took place on Saturday. , in Lisbon, due to illness.
In the message, President João Lourenço says that it was “with particular consternation” that he became aware of the physical passing of the former Sao Tome Head of State.
“Faced with the disappearance of such an eminent figure from the political landscape of São Tomé and Príncipe, widely recognized for his tireless dedication to his country, which led him to direct all the organs of sovereignty of the São Tomé State throughout an extraordinary journey of life, I take this opportunity to address, on behalf of the Angolan Executive and on my own, our deepest condolences for the loss of such an illustrious son of São Tomé and Príncipe, asking Your Excellency to extend them to the bereaved family”, reads up in the message.
The former Sao Tome Head of State (2016-2021) was admitted to a hospital in Lisbon and died around 10pm this Saturday (local time). Elected President of São Tomé and Príncipe on 18 July 2016, Carvalho held office until 2 October 2021, when he was succeeded by Carlos Vila Nova.
