Africa-Press – Angola. Sixty-seven health technicians from Benguela province completed a training course on the prevention and treatment of meningitis, to respond to possible cases of the disease, press learned this Wednesday.
According to the head of the Provincial Department of Public Health, Faustino Vinte, these are professionals from the 10 municipalities of Benguela, who were equipped with skills to combat the disease.
The official said that the training lasted three days and was guided by technicians from the National Directorate of Public Health, being aimed at laboratory professionals, epidemiological surveillance, case managers (doctors) and IT professionals.
Faustino Vinte explained that, taking into account that the neighboring province of Huambo was the one that registered the most cases of the disease in the country, in 2022, there was a need to train trainers to respond to possible cases in Benguela.
He made it known that the province of Benguela currently has a probable case of meningitis, in an eight (8) month old child from the municipality of Caimbambo, who is being followed up by technicians from Luanda.
In the same vein, he said, technicians from the National Directorate have already worked in Caimbambo, where, together with the community from which the patient came, they carried out the screening of the disease, without identifying any other suspicious cases.
The most common symptoms of meningitis are severe headaches, neck stiffness associated with high fever, mental confusion, altered level of consciousness, jet-like vomiting and intolerance to light or loud sounds.
Faustino Vinte advises the population to, in suspected cases of the disease, seek the nearest health unit so that a study can be carried out, because the disease is contagious and kills.
He said that the ways to prevent the disease are: avoiding contact with the patient, keeping your hands always clean, covering your face in case of coughing or sneezing and vaccination.
