The Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), Francisco José da Cruz, defended, Thursday (10), in Arusha, Tanzania, the reaffirmation of the strategic role of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights , especially in the pursuit of the objectives of the AU Agenda 2063, concerning the ratification of legal instruments relating to human rights.
Speaking at the joint retreat between the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the African Union (COREP), which began yesterday, the Angolan diplomat argued that a joint effort is needed to increase the Court’s credibility and visibility. with the Member States, especially with regard to the relevance and quality of their judgments, to allow the due acceptance and compliance of their decisions by the parties concerned.
“We created this system for the application of a Human Rights agenda on the continent, in a pan-Africanist and not individualistic concept, in the sense of strengthening the rule of law, good governance, stability and social justice in our respective countries” , said Ambassador Francisco José da Cruz.
During his speech, the Angolan representative welcomed the venerable judge Chafika Bensaoula for presenting the communication on the challenges faced by the African Court and the role of Member States in improving its efficiency.
The Arusha retreat, which ends today, is attended by judges from the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, members of COREP and representatives of the African Union Commission (AUC).
