Africa-Press – Angola. The patriotism, bravery, courage and determination shown by the heroes of the 4th of February, the Day of the Beginning of the Armed Struggle and National Liberation, should inspire Angolans in the search for solutions to solve the main problems, he said this Friday, in Menongue, historian Luís Paulo Vissunjo.
Speaking at a lecture on the historical significance of the 4th of February, addressed to students of the Instituto Superior Politécnico do Cuando Cubango, which belongs to the Cuito Cunavale University (UCC), he said that the 4th of February represents an indelible mark in the history of the Angolan people, because initiated the liberation process of Angola, which resulted in the conquest of National Independence in 1975.
For this reason, he said that the date should be more and more publicized, so that the new generation becomes aware of it, students should play this role before communities and other fringes of Angolan society.
He advised the students to follow the example of the heroes of the 4th of February, participating directly or indirectly in actions aimed at improving social conditions, growth and development of the economy.
He recommended that they invest in professional and academic training, so that they can be increasingly prepared and qualified to respond to the country’s challenges.
It was in the early hours of February 4, 1961 that a group of women and men, armed with sticks, machetes and other bladed weapons, attacked the House of Reclusion and the Prison of São Paulo, in Luanda, to free political prisoners, threatened with death. .
In response to the attack, the colonial-fascist regime reacted brutally with repression throughout the country, with assassinations, torture and arbitrary arrests. These arrests and murders of many defenseless people led some nationalists to organize for the liberation struggle.
Preparations for the action began in 1958, in Luanda, with the creation of two clandestine groups, one covering the suburbs and the other the urban area, coordinated by Paiva Domingos da Silva, Imperial Santana, Virgílio Sotto Mayor and Neves Bendinha (now deceased). .
The 4th of February 1961 is considered an important milestone in the African struggle against colonialism, in a tradition of resistance against the occupation that came from the peoples of Kassanje, Ndongo and the Central Plateau.
The events of February 1961 thus translated into a sublime expression of nationalism, demonstrated by the Angolans.
