Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan researcher and historian Emanuel Caboco, on Monday recommended to the Provincial Government of Cuanza-Norte that the Dondo Fair, the seat of the municipality of Cambambe, be included in the municipal budget.
In the same way that the provincial government of Zaire, which includes the Festi Congo in its budget, the researcher challenged the Cuanza-Norte government to do the same, to revive “one of the country’s largest cultural festivals.”
The Dondo Fair was established between the 15th and 16th centuries as an important trading post and exchange center for people from different regions who flocked there. The current purpose of the fair, among others, was to record history and promote, as well as introduce visitors to, the skills of the local people.
Manuel Caboco, who was speaking about the cultural heritage of Cuanza-Norte, suggested that each year, as much as is available to the province, the local government should reserve a voice for the Dondo Fair.
The official reported that the Fair was a pre-colonial event and the largest, like others such as Kassange and Pungo-a-Dongo. Both in the province of Malanje.
He added that these Fairs are linked to the business that took place in the Kwanza River Corridor. The historian also recommended the conservation, preservation, and revaluation of heritage through interpretation, restoration, and museum development.
“Whoever goes to Massangano today, what information do they have?” he asked, stating that these aspects need to be improved.
He stated that the lack of information regarding some places of memory (monuments and historical sites), combined with misinformation regarding their importance and history, inhibits tourist visits, study and research.
Emanuel Caboco also proposed promoting popular traditions, cultural events, creating festivals and events related to gastronomy, as well as heritage and patriotic education for the population.
