Huambo promotes measles vaccination campaign

Africa-Press – Angola. Children from zero to five years old are being vaccinated in Huambo, in a campaign that aims to cut the chain of measles transmission and reduce cases of the disease, which, in recent days, tend to increase in the Central Plateau.

The data were presented by the head of the Public Health Department of the Provincial Health Office, Valentim Katolo, who explained that the campaign essentially aims to prevent measles from spreading in all parts of the province.

He added that, on average, five hundred children are vaccinated daily. “Parents’ adherence to vaccination posts is high”.

Valentim Katolo made it known that, in the municipality of Huambo, in addition to fixed posts, children can be vaccinated in children’s centers and primary schools, as they are the places with the highest concentration of minors.

“The number of cases has risen in a worrying way in recent days, so while the official mass campaign does not take place, we are preventing the spread, vaccinating in the neighborhoods where there are many occurrences. blockage”, stressed Valentim Katolo.

He indicated the municipality of Huambo as the locality that is registering the highest number of measles cases, as it is the largest demographic center in the province, defending the need for more work to prevent the disease from spreading in all localities.

Valentim Katolo also expressed the need to reinforce the stock of measles vaccines. “Right now, we are already on the alert system, because when a blocking campaign is carried out, consumption is higher, taking into account that children from zero to 5 years old are vaccinated. When it comes to routine vaccine, the target group has been lower from zero to 2 years and the consumption of logistics has been lower”.

According to Valentim Katolo, the province is waiting for the samples sent to Luanda and if the suspicion of cases of meningitis is confirmed, a vaccination campaign against the disease will be carried out.
