Africa-Press – Angola. The railway stations and areas adjacent to the Bungo/Dr. António Agostinho Neto Airport route will benefit from works to improve train circulation, which will transport passengers from the new airport infrastructure to the city of Luanda and vice versa.

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, confirmed this Wednesday the state of execution of the aforementioned works.

Accompanied by members of the Executive, the Angolan Head of State traveled by train, a route of around 45 kilometers, from Bungo to Dr. António Agostinho Neto Airport, opened in November last year, in the municipality of Icolo e Bengo.

Speaking to the press, the president of the Board of Directors of the National Land Transport Agency, Enio Costa, said that some interference on the railway, such as the illegal sale of products by citizens in some areas adjacent to the railway and the improvement of infrastructure at railway stations prevents the normal circulation of the train, which is expected to transport more than 700 people on the frequencies.

For the Airport coordinator, Paulo Nobrega, testing of equipment for the full functioning of the modern infrastructure is currently underway, scheduled to begin this year, as well as training for staff who will work at the airport.

He clarified that the phased opening of the airport occurs for reasons of security, testing, certification and personnel training, to assess real demand, procedures that help minimize risks and ensure a smooth transition to full operation.

Dr. António Agostinho Neto Airport occupies an area of 1,324 hectares and will have capacity for 15 million passengers and a cargo volume of 130 thousand tons per year.

It has two double runways and is designed to receive, among others, aircraft of the type B747 and A380, currently the largest commercial aircraft, in addition to contemplating the construction from scratch of an airport city that will cover a construction area of 75km2.

The south runway, the largest at the airport, is four thousand meters by 60 meters wide, and received, in June 2022, the first experimental flight of a Boeing 777 type aircraft from the national flag company TAAG.

The airport was designed to be a HUB (revolving hub where a large number of flights are concentrated at certain times), with domestic, regional and international connections, being Angola’s main gateway to the world.

According to forecasts by the Angolan Government, the entry into operation of the infrastructure will boost the growth of national and regional air transport, potentially benefiting approximately 415 million inhabitants in the sub-region.
