Africa-Press – Angola. The deputy director of the Cacanda Prison, in the province of Lunda-Norte, Ezequiel Ginga, pointed to the increase in crimes in the district as the main cause of overcrowding in the prison designed to house 480 inmates.
Speaking to the press about the situation at the prison, the person in charge informed that the prison currently houses 606 inmates, representing an overcrowding of 126 inmates.
Of the 606 inmates, 262 are detained and 344 are convicted.
Of the total number of inmates, he continued, 150 are foreigners from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 89 of whom are convicted and 61 are detained, awaiting trial.
For the official, the problem of overcrowding will only be resolved with the construction of a new prison in the region, specifically in the south of the province, preferably in the municipality of Cuango, where a district court operates.
On the other hand, he reiterated the continuous implementation of training programs, aimed at the social and economic reintegration of inmates, after serving their sentences.
