Africa-Press – Angola. More than two hundred thousand applications for field agents for the 2024 General Population and Housing Census were registered by the National Statistics Institute (INE), during the recruitment process that took place from the 22nd to the 27th of May.
The 2024 population and housing census will begin on July 19 of this year and plans to recruit 79,423 field agents, including 67,131 census takers and 12,292 supervisors, to collect data.
The director of the National Statistics Institute (INE), José Calengi, who was speaking on the sidelines of the SADC Statistics Committee Meeting, which takes place from the 28th to the 30th of May, stated that from the 29th the selection process of census takers, supervisors, administrative and technical assistants.
The person in charge said that the difficulties highlighted by some candidates, in terms of accessing the website, were overcome from the first day, which is why the desired number was reached.
In relation to the SADC meeting, he highlighted that policy instruments for regional statistics, draft sources and data collection methods, among others, will be analyzed.
The population and housing census will be carried out throughout the national territory and will cover national and foreign citizens residing or temporarily absent, as well as accommodation units.
In turn, the Secretary of State for Public Investment, Ivan Marques dos Santos, said that Angola has taken significant steps in terms of producing official statistics, highlighting the expenditure, revenue and employment survey, the company census and establishments, as well as the Multiple and Health Indicator Survey, among others.
He stressed that the country, through the National Statistical System, is committed to implementing SADC guidelines to provide greater robustness to the region’s statistics.
He said that the signing of the SADC statistics protocol, which is a legal document, allows for the reinforcement of development and innovation in the field of statistics in the Region.
On the occasion, the regional executive secretary for SADC integration, Angele Makombo N’tumba, highlighted that the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020-30) establishes the strategic priorities and areas of intervention for its current period of Implementation.
With regard to statistics, the strategy envisages capacity building across the data value chain of the regional statistical system as an area of strategic focus, in order to achieve the outcome of an improved data collection infrastructure and systems essential for the production and use of regional statistics.
“It is up to us to maximize the impact of data on the development of our region, which implies internalizing and paying greater attention to each component of the entire “data value chain”, he concluded.
During three days, in different sessions, National Accounts statistics, poverty statistics, price statistics, agriculture statistics, labor statistics, among other topics, will also be analyzed.
Participating in the meeting are Namibia, Botswana, Madagascar, Seychelles Islands, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, DRC and the Kingdom of Eswati.
