Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of the Interior said that the Civil Protection and Fire Service should improve its way of acting, in order to respond more quickly to emergency situations for city dwellers.

Eugénio Laborinho also asked, during the celebrations of the 41st anniversary of the Civil Protection and Fire Service, celebrated yesterday, that the corporation work more in the preventive and not reactive aspects.

Another important aspect, he recalled, is the collaboration of the citizen, which for the minister is fundamental, for a better provision of services by firefighters. “There should be no distance in the relationship between the citizen and the firefighter”.

During the celebrations, Eugénio Laborinho also guaranteed that he would work to balance the ranks of firefighters. “The firefighter has a preponderant role in society. His path must be worthy of recognition”.

The minister called attention to firefighters to continue to work hard in relation to natural disasters, “assisting themselves with social communication partners, involving administrations, traditional and religious authorities, as well as the entire civil society”.

At the event, Chief Firefighter Commissioner Bensau Mateus, presented the firefighters’ balance sheet, from 30 November 2021 to yesterday, which highlights the record of 1,340 dead and 1,958 injured, as well as 2,584 fires caused by short circuits and gas leaks.

In terms of road accidents, rescue and land rescue, he added, 921 road accidents were recorded, with victims imprisoned, 292 deaths and 1,357 injured, as well as 25,000 people from floods and the drought 1,541 people.

Every year, on the 30th of November, the National Firefighters’ Day is celebrated, as a result of the outbreak of a large fire at the Petrangol refinery, in 1981, in Luanda, where the firefighters, despite the enormous difficulty, were successful.
