Investment boosts fishing in Baía Farta

Africa-Press – Angola. The investment being carried out by businesspeople in the fishing sector, in the municipality of Baía Farta, guarantees sustained growth in catch levels, said Friday (26th), the local administrator, José Ferreira.

In Baía Farta, one of the ten municipalities in the province of Benguela, 14 fisheries are operating and it is estimated that the conservation capacity is currently around 9,000 tonnes of fish.

Data from the Fisheries sector point to the capture of 17,000 tonnes of diverse fish in the second quarter of this year, in Benguela province, more than two thirds of which in Baía Farta.

Speaking about projects in the fisheries sector, the administrator José Ferreira said that, as it is an important fishing center in the country, rich in pelagic and crustacean species, Baía Farta has benefited from investment not only from the business community, but also from the Government.

In this regard, he highlighted the dynamics of entrepreneurs and stresses that, with their own resources or public funding, they have contributed to a significant increase in the levels of capture, processing and freezing of fish.

The administrator adds that, today, the municipality already has shipyards in operation, allowing shipowners to repair damaged boats and recover their business.

On the other hand, it recalls the difficulties of the past, but highlights the creativity of large and medium-sized companies in terms of modern management, since the objective is to ensure the supply of fish to the population.

He declared that the authorities have urged fishermen to abandon inadequate fishing practices and management of enterprises and to make the best use of the resources made available by the State.

As for the direct investment by the Government, the emphasis is on the fishing auction, built in an area of three hectares, which includes a pier bridge 100 meters long and 80 meters wide for mooring medium-sized boats, and another 160 meters length for craft vessels.

The infrastructure also has a 600 square meter market, with counters for preparation, marketing, fish exhibition and an area for depositing and treating waste.

With that, he explained, Baía Farta already has conditions for the conservation of fish for a long period, thus reinforcing the exploration capacity, as it is no longer dependent on the distribution of fresh fish.

Artisanal Fishing

José Ferreira assumes that artisanal fishing is of great importance for the food security of thousands of people who depend on it for their subsistence.

Therefore, he stressed that the Executive intends to boost this activity with policies that will improve the income of hundreds of these fishermen and their families.

He also highlighted the commitment to promote sustainable exploitation of marine resources, in order to improve the supply of fish caught in Baía Farta, which, in essence, is consumed throughout the country.

He made it known that the authorities have followed policies for a balanced exploitation of fishing resources, raising the awareness of fishermen to guarantee the survival of species and fishing activity.

As an example, he points to the control of horse mackerel fishing in the context of conservation of biomass and the increase in the shoal of this fish, which is widely consumed by the population throughout the country.
