Italy considers Angola protagonist of peace in Africa

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, considered Angola “a protagonist of peace and stability on the African continent”.

The Italian Head of State was speaking to the press, this Wednesday, in Rome, at the end of the meeting with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, having underlined that there is a common will to collaborate against wars, within the framework of the UN.

“We know how much he is a protagonist of some peace initiatives”, said President Sergio Mattarella, who said he had asked his counterpart João Lourenço for some assessments on the tensions in the Great Lakes areas and in Sudan.

“I was very interested in hearing his recommendations. He also spoke of the need for a growing collaboration between Angola and the European Union”, continued the President of Italy.

On the occasion, the Italian statesman said that the private meeting was also under analysis Italy’s commitment to exert pressure within the Union so that collaboration with Angola grows.

Flanked by his Angolan counterpart, President Sergio Mattarella stressed that the two States are against wars in the world and, in particular, the one “caused by Russia in Ukraine”.

He called for international collaboration, respect for all States, their independence, sovereignty and increasing collaboration under the banner of multilateralism.

The Angolan President, João Lourenço, arrived at the end of Tuesday afternoon in Rome, capital of Italy, for a two-day state visit.

The Angolan Head of State is in Italy at the invitation of President Sergio Mattarella, who was in Angola on an official visit in February 2019.
