Motorists, motorcyclists and pedestrians from the city of Ondjiva, the capital of the province of Cunene, were this Saturday instructed on the rules of the Highway Code, in order to reduce the rate of accidents that occur in the district and ensure greater safety for passengers users.
Action promoted by the JMPLA Provincial Secretariat in Cunene, in partnership with the Department of Traffic and Road Safety, aimed to raise the awareness of road users, in order to respect the rules of the road and its regulations.
The campaign consisted of distributing pamphlets with traffic rules and signs and advice to motorists and pedestrians on the behavior to be adopted on public roads, which had a greater incidence on Avenida 11 de Novembro, stop 4 Oshamukuio market, as well as within the urban center.
On the occasion, the secretary of JMPLA in Cunene, Marcelino dos Santos, said that the initiative falls within the organization’s social responsibility actions and aimed to educate motorists, with particular emphasis on motorbike taxi drivers to safeguard people’s dignity.
He said that the intention is to make motorists respect and know the minimum of road rules and reflect on the consequences of road accidents.
For the success of the activity, which lasted four hours, he said that more than 80 young people were mobilized in three brigades, who are passing on information about precautions when driving, the use of protective helmets, overcrowding, and not consumption of alcoholic beverages, among others.
The politician highlighted the need and importance of increasingly raising awareness among motorists, motorcyclists and all road users about the need for precaution in relation to their use, so that the high number of accidents that occur on the roads is increasingly reduced.
Representing the Traffic and Road Safety Police, the 1st deputy chief Benedito Eduardo, praised the campaign that served to raise awareness among all users of the road environment (motorists and pedestrians) with the purpose of increasing knowledge about the rules of the Highway Code and change the current framework of the province.
He said that in recent days the accidents that occur on the road are skids, collisions between motorcyclists and pedestrians being run over, with pedestrians being the most vulnerable element on road traffic.
Data from the National Police command in Cunene indicate that during 2023, 364 accidents were recorded, 57 more than in the previous period, which culminated in the deaths of 61 people and 454 injuries.
Lack of prudence, associated with disqualification from driving, excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, poor technical condition of vehicles, dangerous maneuvers and poor pedestrian crossing, were identified as the main causes of accidents.
