The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, acting President of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL), discussed yesterday, in Luanda, the situation in CAR with his counterpart from that country, Faustin Touadéra, and the President from Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby.

The meeting lasted more than two hours, held at the Presidential Palace, as part of the regular consultations on the peace and security situation in CAR (Central African Republic), a country belonging to the Great Lakes region.

At the end of the meeting, which results from an invitation made by President João Lourenço, the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said that the consultations took place in a “fraternal environment”, with the three statesmen having decided to continue with this fraternity existing between the countries. Of region.

This organization, created in 2006, includes Angola, Burundi, CAR, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Chad.

Situation at RCA

Since the coup d’état perpetrated by the rebel group “Seleka”, which led to the overthrow of François Bozizė, former Central African President, the country has been plunged into a situation of growing insecurity.

Populations are being forced to leave their villages in the face of violent ethnic and religious clashes.

Since December 2020, around 60,000 citizens have fled the violence plaguing CAR, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The current Head of State, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, won the presidential elections on December 27th, with 53.16 percent of the votes, against 21.69 percent of his main opponent, former Prime Minister Anicet Georges Dologuéle.
