The Angolan Head of State was awarded, on Tuesday (15), by his counterpart José Maria Neves, with the Amílcar Cabral Medal, the highest distinction of the Cape Verdean State, being the highest point of his two-day visit to the country. . João Lourenço, on the occasion, considered the moment as a great pride, for “being participating in an act in which I was awarded the First Degree of the Amílcar Cabral Medal”.

“I interpret this tribute not as an act of a personal nature, but rather, and fundamentally, as a gesture of recognition of the role that the Angolan people, whom I represent here, played with deep dedication in the context of the struggle of the African National Liberation Movement, for the eradication of of the apartheid regime in South Africa and the consequent liberation of the peoples of Southern Africa”, underlined the President of the Republic.

João Lourenço said that “my emotion is even greater to be sharing this moment with the Cape Verdeans, who generated one of the best children in Africa, an intellectual of international standing, and with a profoundly humanist stature, in whom we are inspired for the liberating deed in which we have been involved for decades, in the fight against colonial domination in Africa”.

These aspects contributed, as can be seen from the words given by the Head of State in gratitude for the distinction. “I feel deeply honored to be honored today (yesterday) with the highest distinction of the Cape Verdean State, in a context in which the State visit to Cape Verde is taking place, during which I had the opportunity to address all matters that can significantly contribute to the continuous strengthening of bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the Republic of Angola and the Republic of Cape Verde.

The Head of State, João Lourenço, spared no words to describe Amílcar Cabral, which he classified as a “respectable African figure who honors and gives his name to this honorable medal that has just been awarded to me”.

He recalled that the two peoples are participants in the construction of the two nations and heirs to the legacy of Amílcar Cabral, Agostinho Neto and other illustrious figures in the contemporary history of Africa, stressing that “it is therefore our responsibility to be the continuators of the profoundly humanist work that they left us as a legacy, of the patriotism that moved them at every moment of their lives, of the sense of justice that permeated all their actions and of the love they nourished for their peoples, for which they dedicated a large part of their lives. their lives, for the sake of rescuing the dignity of the African man”.

President João Lourenço said he was in Cape Verde to convey the feeling of sympathy and friendship that connects the two peoples united by a common history, by the healthy coexistence that has developed over decades and that remains to this day in the relationship fraternal and always friendly that settled between Angola and Cape Verde.

“This distinction will serve as a stimulus for us to continue the efforts aimed at strengthening the ties that unite us to Cape Verde, in favor of progress, economic growth and the well-being of the populations of our respective nations”, concluded the Chief of Angolan State.

The decoration of the President of the Republic took place at the People’s Palace, in a solemn ceremony, with the participation of several Cape Verdean and Angolan political figures, who accompanied the visit to the island country, where important cooperation agreements were signed.
