Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, manifested himself, this Tuesday, fully engaged in the fight against breast cancer, associating himself with the “Pink October” initiative that annually mobilizes Angolan society for that health challenge.

Here is the full message from the Head of State distributed with the following content:

It is with great honor that I join the noble cause “Pink October”, aimed at raising awareness and awareness of the world about the risks, diagnoses and ways of preventing breast cancer, a degenerative disease that victimizes women and men all over the world.

This month of reflection and solidarity with cancer victims, I appeal to women in Africa, in general, and in Angola in particular, to regularly carry out early diagnosis, using self-examination and performing screening mammography, among others , as a way to prevent the disease, whose probability of cure increases by 95 percent with timely and effective treatment.

I also extend the appeal to men, since, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Angolan Institute for the Fight against Cancer (IACC), one percent of all breast cancer cases affect this segment of the population.

We must remain vigilant, making the practice of early diagnosis a tireless routine of awareness and reflection for life.

Therefore, it is necessary that schools, universities, churches and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) join synergies to put an end to the spread of breast cancer within families, institutions and society.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of deaths from cancer rose from 6.2 million in 2000 to 10 million in 2020. Estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer point to an increase in new cases of cancer. of the breast by about 50%. It is urgent to act to reverse this situation.

Although Angola has experienced a significant reduction in the number of cases of the disease – from 1492 in 2019 to 692 in the first half of 2022 – we recognize that there are still many challenges, such as the expansion of oncology services to all provinces, greater focus on specialized training of cadres in oncology, as well as other policy instruments.

Each one of us must be a promoter, par excellence, of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease which, according to WHO data, is a global public health problem and the second leading cause of death for women, after cardiovascular diseases.

One touch can change your life. Take the exam early!
