João Lourenço Sees Angola as Key in Africa Conflict Resolution

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola is today a key player in conflict resolution in Africa due to its experience gained during the civil war, President João Lourenço stated, in Luanda.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025/2026 Parliamentary Year, the Angolan Head of State emphasized that the country offers a doctrine of peace and post-conflict national reconciliation.

He highlighted Angola’s two elections as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, its four terms on the African Union Peace and Security Council, as well as its participation in multiple missions and leadership of several mediation initiatives.

João Lourenço referred to the hosting of the Luanda Biennial for the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence, “whose recognition has established our country as a champion for peace and reconciliation in Africa, a highly significant milestone that makes any patriot proud”.

Regarding foreign policy, the Angolan President once again advocated the lifting of the economic embargo against Cuba, the full sovereignty of the people of Western Sahara, and the two-state solution as conditions for a definitive resolution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

He noted that the same ideal guides Angola’s position regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, calling for respect for the United Nations Charter and international law.

In this regard, the Head of State advocated for the search for a peaceful and negotiated solution that eliminates the use of military force and the logic of the law of the strongest.

In his speech of more than three hours, the statesman acknowledged that the outdated criteria of geopolitical representation that guarantee a correct and balanced representation in today’s world, among other things, continue to motivate Africa to raise its voice in the international arena in support of deep reforms of the United Nations Security Council.

He emphasized that this goal involves granting the African continent at least two seats among the permanent members with full rights.

The Head of State reaffirmed that Africa remains Angola’s priority in its foreign policy, highlighting the country’s unique position in assuming, for the first time in its history, the pro tempore presidency of the African Union.

“It is an achievement that fills us with patriotic pride, as it constitutes one of our greatest diplomatic achievements, but it also increases our responsibility to the African continent,” he stated.
