Africa-Press – Angola. During his participation in the High Level Panel, which followed the opening ceremony of the Dakar Forum on Peace and Security, the Head of State defended a greater commitment to the training of young people in Africa, so that they can consolidate the sovereignty of their countries.
Asked how he considers the challenge of consolidating sovereignty in Africa, the Head of State, who participated in the Forum as a guest of honor, highlighted that, in order to achieve this goal, it is not enough to have a strong army.
“We need to raise the cultural level of our populations, the level of schooling and education of our young people, above all”, he stressed.
The President said that the pursuit of this end depends on a set of factors that are not limited to the military security of the borders, but, above all, the education of the people.
Still on this point, João Lourenço pointed out that the more educated the people are, the more easily they can defend themselves against sovereigns.
“The more we have our economy developed, with infrastructure capable of interconnecting the different countries of our continent, the more easily we will achieve sovereignty, whether individual, of the countries or of the continent”, he stressed.
Regarding infrastructure, the Head of State regretted the fact that there are no easy connections between the countries by land, sea and air on the continent.
“There will even be cases in which, for an African citizen to move to another country on the same continent, they have to go, first, to Europe, to make the connection, and then return to the continent”, highlighted the Angolan statesman, for whom African countries will only develop if they have infrastructure.
“We need to develop our countries from an economic and social point of view, because, with strong economies, we will be in a better position to defend our sovereignties”, he added.
The President said that with the creation of these conditions, foreign direct investment will emerge more easily, which will generate more jobs for young people on the continent.
On another question about his perspective regarding the stability of the Great Lakes Region in the short, medium and long term, President João Lourenço said they were good and highlighted that Angola has worked hard to move to the Region your experience on conflict resolution.
He stressed that it is based on this “success story of Angola” that efforts have been made to help African countries in conflict situations. “We are on the right path. We need to move forward,” she stressed.
Regarding the fight against terrorism in the region, another question raised, President João Lourenço said that one of the ways out of this evil involves more work.
“What we have to do is continue to gather all kinds of resources, such as political, military and economic, to face this phenomenon that is corroding our continent”, he reiterated.
